CATEGORY :
Antiseptic .
MECHANISM OF ACTIONS :
Reduces bacterial load and the risk of infection
. Water soluble complex of iodine with Povidone
. Povidone iodine contains 9% to 12% available
iodine . It retains the bactericidal activity of
iodine but is less potent . Therefore causes
less irritation to skin and mucous membranes .
In vitro , HIV appears to be completely
inactivated by Povidone iodine preparation ;
further study is needed . Povidone iodine
liberates free iodine which is microbiocidal to
G+ and G- bacteria , fungi , viruses , protozoa
and yeasts . In the presence of blood , serum
and necrotic tissue its activity persists whilst
the color remains .
INDICATIONS :
For preoperative prepping of operative site and
as a general topical bactericide / virucide for
degerming skin and mucous membranes . Kills
pathogens in primary or secondary topical
infection ; first , second , and third – degree
burns ; surgical incisions ; decubitus or stasis
ulcers ; traumatic lesions . Use
prophylactically to help prevent microbial
infection in incisions , burns , topical lesions
.
CONTRAINDICATIONS :
Povidone iodine is not recommended for regular
use in neonates and contraindicated in very low
birth weight infants ( below 1500 grams ) .
Known or suspected iodine hypersensitivity .
Regular use is contraindicated in patients or
users with thyroid disorders ( in particular
nodular colloid goitre , endemic goitre and
Hashimoto`s thyroiditis ) .
DRUG INTERACTIONS :
Absorption of iodine from Povidone iodine may
interfere with thyroid function tests .
Contamination with Povidone iodine of several
types of tests for the detection of occult blood
in faeces or blood in urine may produce false
positive results .
ADVERSE EFFECTS :
Prolonged exposure to wet solution may cause
irritation or rarely , severe skin reactions .
In rare instance of local irritation or
sensitivity , discontinue use . The application
of Povidone iodine to large wounds or severe
burns may produce systemic adverse effects such
as metabolic acidosis, hypernatraemia and
impairment of renal function . |
